Photography Exhibition: African Cinema Behind the Scenes

FM1A3172

Our exhibition this year consists of a unique collection of photographs revealing the world of filmmaking behind the scenes - catching those unguarded moments within the production and post-production stages, on and off the film set. African Cinema Behind the Scenes captures the often unseen journey of cinema from story development to location scouting, to rehearsals and seeing stars, crew and directors at work! The images included in this exhibition are all photographs taken from films included in our 2016 festival programme.

F1000001

“Freedom is coming tomorrow!”

In 1976 about 20,000 black students in Soweto organised a protest against the apartheid government’s policy to make Afrikaans the official language in schools, instead of their indigenous languages. When the police and army arrived the peaceful student protesters were met with fierce police brutality, resulting in many students being injured or killed as a result. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the infamous Soweto Uprising.

Through song and dance, this film follows the story of a young, politically charged student named Sarafina who is fighting for freedom against the apartheid regime and becomes an inspiration to her classmates.

The screening will start with a fashion show showcasing traditional African and Scottish dress.

The Battle of Algiers

image7

A celebratory screening marking the 50th anniversary of the release of Gillo Pontecorvo’s seminal work, The Battle of Algiers. Set in the 1950s, the film follows the harrowing reality of Algeria’s post-war struggle for liberation against the French colonial government. The unforgiving representation of the French military’s counterinsurgency tactics led to the film being banned in France, and its portrayal of military strategy warranted a screening at the Pentagon in 2003. 50 years on, it is still an essential piece of filmmaking, not only because of its historical significance and the role the film played in the political landscape at the time, but also because of its unfortunate relevance in contemporary society.

Supported by Alliance Française and the Society for Francophone Postcolonial Studies.

Naked Reality

nakedreal 1280

Naked Reality is the cinema of the future, a new science fiction film from renowned Cameroonian director Jean-Pierre Bekolo. Set 150 years from now in a time when African cities have grown into one big metropolis, it follows the story of Wanita who leaves home one morning, not knowing that her first prayer to her ancestors has started a journey to another dimension. But her journey is fraught and blinded by her other self - the desire to be someone else. She is the first of a new generation, the only ones with the DNA to break free from the shackles of the immortals. Bekolo is not new to the science fiction genre, he directed Les Saignantes which screened at Africa in Motion previously. Experimental in style and narrative Naked Reality leaves the audience with a blank canvas to interpret and create the story filling in the missing elements.

This screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Jean-Pierre Bekolo and a wine reception.

Reviving Scotland's Black History

RSBH

Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, this year Africa in Motion Film Festival and the Coalition for Racial Equality and Rights (CRER) worked in partnership to develop a young programmers project entitled ‘Reviving Scotland’s Black History’. We brought together five young aspiring film programmers from different backgrounds to take part in lectures, walking tours, site visits and seminars exploring black heritage in Scotland and the UK. Through this project they discovered Scotland’s links to slavery, through for example Glasgow’s architecture, learnt about the various race riots that have taken place in Scotland from 1916 onwards as well as about Scottish activism against racism.

From the knowledge they acquired the young programmers were then tasked with programming four events taking place during Africa in Motion Film Festival and Black History Month. These screenings and events are inspired by what they learnt, combined with their own life experiences and passions.

The Journey of Antonio

CDM 3. palmeiras vento

‘’The film that I have chosen is based on the colonisation of and immigration to Mozambique by civilians from Portugal. This is also part of my great grandfather’s history, Antonio D’Alumeida. He was a mixed-race man born in Portugal to a black mother and a white father. As a young adult Antonio sold spices with his uncles but it wasn’t until later on that he decided to move to Mozambique as a missionary. After a period of time my great grandfather then moved to my home country Zimbabwe, where he settled. It was there he got married and his wife gave birth to my grandmother who unfortunately passed away after giving birth. This screening will be preceded by my story’’. Curated by Tinofara Fombe

A Costa dos Murmúrios (The Murmuring Coast)

Margarida Cardoso | Mozambique/Portugal/Germany 2004 | 2h | Portuguese with English subtitles | 15

This film is set during the 1960s when Mozambique was fighting for independence from Portuguese colonial rule. It focuses on the story of a woman who moves from Lisbon to Mozambique to marry a man who is currently enlisted in the military services. The relationship between the couple begins to become unstable once the disturbing truths of war are exposed - the racism, violence and injustice. The Murmuring Coast addresses the view from an outsider moving into a country at the time that the violence of a colonial age is coming to the fore.

La Belle at The Movies reveals the disappearance over the past decade of cinema-going culture in the Democratic Republic of the Congo through interviews with cinema audiences, filmmakers and cinema owners all living in Kinshasa, a city of 10 million deprived of a single working cinema. Filmmaker Cecilia Zoppelletto intimately shares the nostalgia for the visual excitement that cinema provided, while also celebrating aspects of Kinshasa’s cinematic history like the Kinshasa cowboys who found their identity in the Spaghetti Westerns of the 1960s. Zoppelletto’s intriguing documentary takes us on a journey around the city streets and the old, neglected cinemas of the Congo, a reality that can also be found closer to home. Migration (mis) Translation

Listen Mother cast Zeinab Rahal 00094922

The life of a film often depends on its migration to other lands and its translation into other languages in order for it to be seen widely. This collection of short films considers concepts and feelings of geographical dislocation represented on the screen, by looking at the migrant’s physical movement, the dystopian futures that lie ahead and the state of being ‘lost in translation’ when away from home.

Decolonising the image: Repression and resistance in anti-colonial film

Afrique50 ReneVautier 0 1

In an attempt to maintain order, the 1934 Laval Decree sought to control all images of Africa and French colonialism, giving the French authorities the right to refuse anyone permission to film in the colonies. Shot between 1950 and 1970, these three short films are of immense historical and aesthetic importance. From the first French anti-colonial film to the first documentary shot by African filmmakers south of the Sahara, Colonising the image explores through film the relationship between France and (colonial) Africa.

The screenings will be followed by a panel discussion with Professor Michael Syrotinski, Dr Mathilde von Bülow  and Professor David Murphy, all scholars working in postcolonial studies.

Curated by Alasdair Campbell.

Ndoto Ya Mpira Ya Miguu Zanzibar (Going For Gold: Zanzibar Soccer Dreams)

Still 4

Going for Gold: Zanzibar Soccer Dreams is a follow up to Zanzibar Soccer Queens (2007), a documentary film about the personal stories and football activities of the predominantly Muslim female football team ‘Women Fighters’ in Zanzibar. The much-awaited sequel Going for Gold continues to document the strong will of the female football teams and their individual players who are determined to better their lives and define new identities through the game of football. This heart-warming documentary shows how women’s involvement with football on the island of Zanzibar has literally taken them across borders and oceans, and away from the confines of the traditional role of a Muslim woman for whom sport is often not possible.

This screening will be followed by a Q&A with female football coach Nassra Mohammed who has inspired the development of women’s football in Zanzibar since the late 1980s.

This event is held in partnership with the United Glasgow Football Team (UGFC).

Nobody’s Died Laughing

PDU Stage

Nobody’s Died Laughing is a documentary biopic celebrating the life and work of South African artist and activist Pieter-Dirk Uys. Using never seen before archive footage alongside candid interviews with both Uys and the important people that have surrounded his career, director Willem Oelofsen provides unprecedented access to one of South Africa’s most enigmatic and controversial figures. Focusing on issues ranging from censorship in the apartheid-era, to Uys’s humanitarian work on the HIV epidemic in present-day South Africa, Nobody’s Died Laughing is not only an intimate portrait of the multifaceted, and often hilarious, work of a post-apartheid ‘national treasure’, but also of the turbulent socio-political context that Uys – as well as the film itself – is holding up to scrutiny.

This film is screening as part of the Documentary Competition.
